Back to Basics - The New Norm
In this ever changing world we are living in currently it’s a wonderful time to get back to basics. Parents are home more, kids are being home schooled and more of us have time on our hands and occasionally wondering what to do!
This is the first in a series of blogs on getting back to basics in the kitchen.
I love to cook and to create something out of nothing. I am blessed to have the ability to see what’s in the cupboard and come up with something to eat that the family will love. Now I recognise that not everyone has this knack or even desire to cook and create but I would love to be able to help those who need an extra hand, and here it is!
I am a big believer that FOOD is Medicine. Changing the way we eat can actually have a MASSIVE impact on our body and helping it heal and come back to homeostasis.
Meaning of Homeostasis
‘In biology, homeostasis is the state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. This dynamic state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits.’
I am living proof of this. Utilising food to remove inflammation from the body and start the healing process. One of the ways I utilise this is through my Compatibility Program through my clinic, its an amazing tool I use and it has been a game changer for many of my clients. Reach out if your interested in knowing more. :)
Lets talk about the basics. The products that people are buying lots of like rice, pasta, packaged foods are not the basics. What I’m talking about is fresh fruits and vegetables, reliably sources meats, chicken and fish, healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil and whole grain (if you can tolerate them). Essentially a whole food diet. This is what you want to be eating everyday to keep your immune system strong and healthy.
If this is new to you the first step is to start by changing one meal a day that you make form scratch.
Start with breakfast. Ideas are eggs any way you like, oats is filling but also nourishing to the body and the nervous system, chia pudding (recipe below), muesli with yogurt and fruit and pancakes. These are nourishing to the body and easy to make.
Here I have made a simple handout of essential basic foods for you to download and print (if you wish).
Here is the chia pudding recipe.
Hope this helps get you started and gives you some ideas for breakfast.
